Surrounded by rice fields and little hamlets on all sides, the serene settings were perfect for the birth of a great soul, for it was at Kamarpukur, adorned with the beauty of nature and ever-greens, that Sri Ramakrishna was born on 18th February, 1836.
Kamarpukur, renowned as the birthplace of great saint Sri Ramakrishna, is a holy place situated in the Hoogly District of West Bengal in India. Ramakrisna took birth on Kamarpukur soil in 1836 as the son of a poor Brahmin. Ramakrishna’s original home was situated at this village and later Ramakrishna Math was established at this place. The canal Bhutir-Khal flows on the western side of the village. This is a pilgrimage location of devotees of Sri Ramakrishna.
The old buildings, tanks and remains of ancient temples are all attractive to the travellers. There are many other attractions in this place including the ancestral home of Sri Ramakrishna, Yogi’s Siva temple, Raghubir Temple, Haldar-Pukur and Manik Raja's Mango Grove. The temples in this city are really imposing and are places offering secluded worship. Temple of Gopeswar Siva, Dhani Kamarini's Temple and Mukundapur Siva Temple are some among them. Sitanath Pyne's House and Chinu Shankhari's birth-place are also attractive destinations for the tourists.
